Green Brocade Diamond Scarf

Green Brocade Diamond Scarf

Handwoven in very fine silk, this grey-green scarf is of medium weight with a slightly crisp hand. It is decorated with seven horizontal bands of discontinuous supplementary-weft-woven diamonds. This technique is called chok in Lao. The bands are spaced about 7 1/2″ apart and the constituent diamonds are about 1 1/2″ high and 2 1/4″ long. Consistent with the understated tone of the scarf, the silk weft for the diamonds has been dyed with muted tones of silver, salmon, and rose. The scarf is finished with long, delicate twisted fringe in taupe.

Mrs. Maneechan wove this fine textile at the Living Crafts Centre in Luang Prabang, Laos. The Centre is part of Ock Pop Tok, whose mission is to support traditional Lao crafts and to provide economic opportunities for the artists.
