Weaving Lives: Transforming Textile Traditions in the Peruvian Highlands

February 21 – August 2, 2013 at the Avenir Museum.

This exhibit will explore the vital traditions and transformations of weaving, spinning and dyeing in the Peruvian Highland villages. Textile traditions and current weaving culture of the nine communities associated with The Center for Traditional Textiles in Cusco (CTTC), Peru will be the focus of this exhibition.

Trunk Show of Handwovens from the Peruvian Highlands

Here’s your chance to support the handweaving tradition of the Peruvian Highland weavers and spinners. Any number of these exquisite naturally-dyed handwoven ponchos, shawls, table runners and mats, pillow covers, belts, braids, bags and pouches, dolls, handspun yarns and handknitted hats could be yours. All items are uniquly made from the members of the weaving villages of the Center for Traditional Textiles in Cusco, Peru. Your purchase helps maintain a culture of weaving and supports more than 350 weavers and 250 children in nine regions.

Textile Society of America Symposium Marketplace

The TSA Biennial Symposium will feature a marketplace at the Washington Court Hotel, open to symposium registrants and to the general public, featuring wearable art, ethnic textiles, books, yarn, fabric, and other unique items available for purchase. The broad range of makers and suppliers will exhibit creativity, diversity in design, techniques, and aesthetics – including both contemporary and ethnic textiles – all of the highest quality.

The Marketplace will be open Thursday, September 20 10 AM-6 PM (for symposium registrants only); Friday, September 21, 10 AM-6 PM (for symposium registrants and the general public all day; and Saturday, September 22, 10 AM-6 PM (for symposium registrants and the general public all day).

 Textiles & Politics, Textile Society of America 13th Biennial Symposium  will include over 200 presentations on all aspects of textiles, including juried papers, films, and artist demonstrations, as well as behind-the-scenes access to textile collections at DC-area museums through site seminars and tours, exciting hands-on workshops, and ample collegial time at evening receptions and events.
