Product Description
Indian artisan Aziz Khatri is a master at resist-dyeing techniques. The patterning in this silk scarf is made using a stitched resist known as shibori.
To make a shaped-resist pattern, part of a fabric has to be bound, clamped, folded, pleated, stitched, twisted, or wrapped before dyeing; the dye penetrates the non-resisted areas only. After dyeing, and once the fabric is released from its bindings, a positive and negative design shows. Look at the detail image of this scarf and see the little marks left from the stitching.
Abdul Aziz Khatri learned the art of bandhani from his family, the traditional patterns from his mother and grandmother, and dyeing techniques from his father. In 2005, Aziz expanded his proficiency by studying at Kala Raksha Vidhylaya, a design school in Kutch, India. He continues to explore other resist-dyeing techniques, such as clamping and stitching.
