Shimmering light and dark bands alternate along the length of these beautiful silk scarves. The light bands are approximately 4 inches long, and the dark bands are approximately 2 1/2 inches. Although the very fine silk warp is deep indigo blue, it is widely sett so that the fine gray, gray-green, or silver silk weft is only slightly muted by it. The light bands are slightly transparent. They are composed of alternating wefts of thick, natural-dyed silk and fine natural or lightly dyed silk woven to give two lines of thick, light color and two fine lines of darker color. Natural variations in the thickness of the light-colored wild silk give the bands dimension and texture. The scarves are light-weight with an excellent drape. They are finished with fine, twisted fringe.
These scarves were handwoven by skilled artisans at the Centre for Living Crafts in Luang Prabang, Laos. The Centre is supported by Ock Pop Tok, an organization whose mission is to develop economic and artistic opportunities for artists who practice and maintain traditional crafts.
