This exquisitely woven fine-silk prayer flag has a deep purple ground and central diamond motifs created with fine silk threads. Divided by thin, black wooden dowels, the textile has three vertical decorated rectangles, each approximately 11 1/2 inches long. Within each panel is a central nested tri-color diamond motif woven in a discontinuous supplementary weft technique called chok to give a raised, brocade effect. The motifs are based on those seen on prayer banners hanging in local temples.
This textile is woven by Miss Dapon in Ock Pop Tok’s Living Crafts Centre in Luang Prabang, Laos. Ock Pop Tok’s mission is to support traditional crafts and economic opportunities.
