Woven from natural palm leaves, this light and beautiful basket looks great decorating a wall or as a serving basket to enhance the beauty of your home.
Utilizing traditional weaving techniques the Hwange baskets are woven on radials of ‘creepers’ (vines), and palm leaves are dyed with locally harvested materials such as bark and roots to make up the intricately patterned designs. The baskets are finished using a coiled rim with a distinctive herringbone pattern. These baskets were traditionally used for winnowing maize and are often called winnowing baskets. The designs are inspired by nature and depict the cultural values of the weaver.
This collection of baskets were made by a women’s collective in the Hwange region of Zimbabwe and featured at the 2016 Santa Fe Folk Art Market.
