This necklace is handmade from hand-knotted buttons, a technique and skill used for the djellaba (caftan) traditional clothing. The women of the artisan cooperative in Khenifra, Morocco, make these buttons using fine rayon thread, historical they were made with a spun, lustrous silken fiber of a cactus plant. After which, they string them in a colorful array as beads to create jewelry. Most of the designs are created by the individual artisan who made it, the inspiration their own. This brick red and burnt orange cluster necklace has an easy hook closure at the back neck, and is quite comfortable to wear. The Artisanat des Femmes cooperative represents women from low-income families in Khenifra, Morocco, who have joined together to establish self-sufficiency and find markets for their work.
