Horizontal bands of traditional motifs are hand woven in beautiful natural browns, creams, grey and black. This handsome pillow cover is made on a backstrap loom with special emphasis on the traditional patterning from Chinchero in the Peruvian Highlands of Cusco. The edges are cleanly finished with a decorative tubular braid, nawi awapa, meaning “eye border”.
The pillow front is woven in all natural coloring from alpaca and sheep’s fleece. The pillow backs are plain gray commercial fabric with zippered closures. Pillow insert not included.
This pillow was woven by Flora Callanaupa Alvarez, an artisan member of the Center for Traditional Textiles in Cusco, Peru. CTTC works with Quechua weavers to ensure that their 2000-year old textile traditions continue to thrive, and to aid in economic development.
