Product Description

Peruvian women use these beautiful squares or rectangles as mantas, a small traditional shawl that is often used as a carrying cloth but we find them ideally suited for interior decor. Used as table accents or wall art, they will add a warm and special touch to your home.

The intricate fabrics are handwoven on a backstrap loom and then joined to make a four sided cloth. This manta features meticulously embroidered geometric bands. This technique is unique to the village of Sallac, and the finished result looks as though it was produced by a supplementary weft weaving technique. The join is hidden by embroidery, and the four edges of the cloth are finished with the traditional ñawi awapa braid trim. The alpaca and wool yarn is naturally dyed from local plants, flowers, barks, bugs, and roots. The motifs are traditional to this weaving village, Sallac. Sallac also

This manta is woven by Teodora Hullca Rodriguez. She is a member of the Sallac village cooperative which is part of the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco, located in the Peruvian highlands of Cusco.
